History of the Department Sport & Recreation

The Department of Sport and Recreation was the last Department which was created by the Government under the leadership of Dr H.F. Verwoerd. The establishment of the new Department followed pleas by sports administrators, social scientists and recreational experts. In October 1965 the SA Association for Physical Education and Recreation adopted a proposal at its Silver Jubilee Congress in Bloemfontein that it make representations for a government department of this nature. This decision was transmitted to the SA Federation for Youth and Sport who supported it. The functions of the Department were published in the Government Gazette of 1 July 1966 and it was clear that the main object was to contribute to the development of a sound and healthy nation by means of sport and recreational activities.
