World Cup brings in spending visitors

Initial indications are that the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the largest sports event ever held in South Africa, will produce a massive economic injection from overseas visitors.

At a recent press conference the Director General of SRSA, Mr Vernie Petersen, quoted incoming visitor figures for the initial period of the World Cup. He said that a total of 456 000 visitors had arrived from outside South Africa during the period 1-13 June, which was an increase of 111 000 over the same period last year. Thus, the country has seen an increase of more than 30%, mostly due to the holding of the World Cup, one would assume.

A report from Visa states that spending by overseas visitors to South Africa using their Visa credit cards had increased more than 54% for the period 1-20 June. This means that foreign visitors are spending substantially more per person, when the two figures are compared. This points to the power of sports events as attractions for high-spending visitors.

The Visa report states that visitors spent an additional R300m on purchases during the stated period, when compared to the same period in 2009. The strongest contributors to this figure was the United Kingdom, United States, Australia, France and Brazil.

Visa is one of six global sponsoring partners with FIFA, and have high-profile local marketing campaigns featuring the World Cup.
