2015-05-20 On the occasion of the S.R.S.A. Budget Vote debate in the Parliament of RSA - Dep Min G. Oosthuizen

The Recreation Programme is in keeping with our vision of an Active Nation. Cabinet declared the first Friday of October each year Annual National Recreation Day. This is not a public holiday, but provides an opportunity to all South Africans to be actively involved by participating in recreation activities that will improve their health and well-being. The Big Walk will be staged on the first Sunday of October to encourage participation in physical activity. In collaboration with the Department of Health, the Move for Health Day encouraged communities to make physical activity a priority by promoting activities as fun. The day provided a focal point to generate public awareness of the benefits of physical activity in the prevention of non-communicable diseases, assisting us to create a Healthy and Active Nation. Even though an integrated and sustainable club structure is recognised as a prerequisite for the foundation of the South African sport system, there is no accurate picture of which clubs exist and what their membership status are.
