SRSA to prepare 2010 Cabinet report

SRSA has appointed well-known mega-event expert Hugo Olivier to co-ordinate and author a final report on the 2010 FIFA World Cup that will be presented to Cabinet at the end of September. 

Olivier played a leading role in South Africa's participation with many previous mega-events, including various editions of the  the Commonwealth Games as well as the Zone VI Games hosted in Potchefstroom in 2008.

The Cabinet report will among other contain a financial section compiled bydetailing the budget of the World Cup.

While most high level impact research results are still outstanding and will only be available in the last quarter of this year, initial indications are that the World Cup has been positive for South Africa, both economically and socially.

Some preliminary facts and statistics about the event has emerged in a number of other reports. Visa, the international credit card brand, has reported a 70% increase in transactions by foreign visitors in South Africa, who have spend more than R2,5 billion in Visa credit card during the World Cup.

A report from the Department of Home Affairs mentions an increase of 25% in overseas arrivals during the World Cup, compared to the same period last year. More than 1 400 000 crossed into South Africa during this period.
