Crown Green Bowls - The skills of the game

The history of the game of bowls is shrouded in the mists of time. The Normans, having conquered and settled in England, played a game similar, in essence, to the one we play today. They pitched large, round stones towards an upright cone of stone. A drawing shows that by the fourteenth century a small round ball, or bowl, had taken the place of the upright cone.
