MINISTER WISHES ALL ATHLETES LUCK WHO WILL BE ENGAGED IN VARIOUS INTERNATIONAL ASSIGNMENTS OVER THE WEEKEND

TSHWANE:

The Department and the Ministry of Sport and Recreation SA under the leadership of Minister Thulas Nxesi, wishes all South African athletes who would be engaged in various international events the best of luck come this weekend.

On the Boxing front, Zolani Tete will be defending his Bantamweight belt against fellow South African, Sisonke Goya in Northern Ireland this Saturday, 18 November 2017.

Despite Zolani not walking away with the South African Sports Star of the year Award, this weekend the upcoming fight against his South African counterpart will grant him an opportunity to get back to winning ways. Meanwhile, Sisonke Goya who for the first time will be challenging Zolani Tete outside South Africa is confident enough to walk away with the WBO title.

In matters of football, SuperSport United travels to Lubumbashi to face TP Mazembe in the first leg of the CAF Confederations Cup final, with the second leg scheduled for Sunday 27 November 2017. SuperSport FC looks set to continue their good run ahead of the return match.

On the Rugby front, the Springboks travel to Paris to take on the French rugby team in the test match that is billed as a grudge match after World Rugby awarded the hosting of the 2023 Rugby World Cup to France.

“We have dusted ourselves off the disappointment of failing to secure the rights to host the Rugby World Cup and we are looking forward as a nation to challenges ahead commencing this weekend. I urge all citizens to rally behind all our athletes who will be competing in various assignments and wishing them all the success. Let’s go out there in our respective corners and cheer all our sports stars so that they can all do well, forward ever, backwards never”, indicated Minister TW Nxesi.

Government high powerful delegation headed by Deputy President Ramaphosa, Minister of Sport and Recreation TW Nxesi and SARU President Mark Alexander has traveled to London where the final announcement on whether South Africa will host the 2023 Rugby World Cup will be made.

Subsequently two weeks ago, our country’s bid in London was named as the “clear leader” and “unanimous” choice by the Rugby World Cup board to host the tournament whilst contenders France and Ireland were rated second and third respectively.

The final decision now rests with 26 World Rugby Council members who will collectively exercise 39 votes which among them a simple majority will be required to secure South Africa as the host Country. The most important voting process will be conducted in a secret ballot on Wednesday, 15 November 2017.

The announcement is scheduled for approximately 15h00 (SA time) and will be broadcast live on SuperSport (Channel 201) The Government therefore takes this opportunity to urge members of the public and the media this Wednesday (15 November) to wear green in support of the Rugby world Cup 2023 announcement and further, invite media and the public to the public viewing area to come witness the announcement of the preferred host country.
