The Status of SA Women in Sport and Recreation 1994-2004

The aim of the research is to establish the impact of democracy on the status of South African girls and women in different sectors of recreation and sport. The rationale relates to the impact of socialization and access to resources within a democratic society where gender equality is constituted and propagated. The main methods consisted of an in-depth structured interview and questionnaire that took about an hour each to complete. These methods allowed for diversity in approach and represented different frames of reference for respondents from different sectors. A representative judgement sample of the main respondents within all nine provinces participated in focus group discussions to engage in debate and provide a ollective view of issues and strategies concerning gender within their region.
