Indigenous Games Festival 2019 (#MyGamesMyRootsMyFuture)

This Heritage month as the country continue to celebrate 25 years of Freedom and Democracy, the Department of Sport and Recreation South Africa in partnership with Limpopo Provincial Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and the City of Polokwane, brings you the Indigenous Games festival (#IGF2019). This is an Active Nations programmes with the purpose of supporting the provision of mass participation opportunities in sport and recreation.  

The #IGF2019 as outlined in the Departmental Annual Performance Plan emanate from Active Nation programme with a number of objectives including amongst others,
•    encouragement of an active nation and contribution to improving the overall wellbeing of South Africans by implementing lifelong participation in active recreation.
•    Inspire lifelong physical activity by providing mass sport participation opportunities to at least 5 136 community members in 3 sport promotion events in 2018/19.

The #IGF2019 falls under the Sub - programmes of Active Recreation which delivers programmes which improve the health and wellbeing of the nation by providing mass participation opportunities in various formats that cater for a broad spectrum of participants.

The Indigenous Games Festival (#IGF2019) will once again be hosted in Limpopo during this Heritage month (22 – 26 September 2019). The event forms part of the heritage celebrations in South Africa and encompassing various elements inclusive of indigenous games, street carnival, fashion show, African dance, crafts market, African food village, beer garden, family picnic to name a few. The objective of the mentioned festivities is to increase patronage of the Games.  The long-term vision for this project is to further elevate the festivities and traditional activities to the extent that spectators that attend equally enjoy a full cultural bouquet and not necessarily just for the sporting aspect.
This #IFG2019 a total of 1791 athletes will be taking part in 9 indigenous games inclusive of 37 code structures and 580 learners emanating from various schools across all provinces. The learners who will be participating in the #IGF2019 are learners who normally take part in National School Sport Championships alongside community participants.

Times: 10H00 daily - till late
