Minister welcomes Spar Protea's Netball Team

Tshwane - Minister Nathi Mthethwa welcomed  the Spar Netball Protea's at OR Tambo International Airport as they arrived  from the 2019 Netball World Cup. In his welcome of the team, Minister was accompanied by the Gauteng MEC of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Ms Mbali Hlophe.

A large number of South African Sport fans and school kids braced the chilly early evening to welcome their sport heroes, although the whole team was not present. The media as well ascended to OR Tambo international to witness and cover the return of the players from the Netball World Cup.

The girls played and gave their all for the Nation, they became great ambassadors and carried the South African Flag high. My never forget moment is when they managed to give Jamaica a run for their money and won that match. The entire team are champions and we need to applaud them for the tenacity and selfless approach during the entire tournament. Now the world knows South Africa moreover, we would be hosting then 2023 Netball World Cup. We just need to start getting our preparations in order across all platforms. We have to also ensure that the trophy stays here in 2023 and doesn't leave our shores, stated Minister Mthethwa.

The President of Netball Cicilia Molokwane, indicated how humbled she is to the sponsors of the Team inclusive of both Spar and Telkom pertaining to their commitment of rewarding the girls handsomely. She further expressed her appreciation to all media stating how the team has been kept on its toes by the media in ensuring that the team gets the coverage it deserves. She conclude but wishing the former coach of the Spar Protea's (Norma Plummer) well and further, indicated that soon she will be announcing the new national team coach and hopefully it will be a South African so that come 2023, the team will be coached by a SA coach whilst playing on home soil.

Gauteng MEC of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Mbali Hlophe after expressing her gratitude to the team, outlined the plans that the province of Gauteng has in store ahead of the 2023 Netball World Cup in ensuring that the sport gets the footprint it deserves . MEC Hlophe also spoke lengthy on the prospects of developing infrastructure in aiding the Sport of playing venue in ensuring that when the Netball league is formed in future,  the sport will have proper infrastructure.

The captain of the Spar Netball Protea's (Bongiwe Msomi) companied by both Erin Burger and Khanyisa Chawane with Erin having to travel to Australia therefore missing the formal press briefing. The Captain of the team (Bongiwe Msomi) expressed her appreciation to the media, the fans and most important the Sponsors of the team. She also extended her appreciation to all her team mates for the beautiful team spirit and discipline they displayed during the entire tournament.

The Spar Protea's  Netball team were humbled by both its major sponsors Telkom and Spar which indicated that the 12 member team will each pocket R400 000 which was conveyed through the SA Netball President, Ms Cecilia Molokwane.
The Spar Netball Protea's had a wonderful run leading to the semifinal beating along the way the likes of Uganda, Scotland only to lose to Australia and England respectively.
