The Annual event activation of the programme reminds the  South African community of the progress the department is making in advancing its mandate in transforming the golf sporting landscape in the country.

The department’s drive to deliver on this programme is spearheaded by strategic objectives as outlined in the National Sports Recreation Plan, inclusive but not exclusive to:
•    Ensuring that equal opportunities exist for all South Africans to participate and excel in sport and recreation.
•    Optimising of access to sport and recreation facilities, in this case to ensure opportunity for playing facilities and thereby driving access for golf development to ensue.
•    Sub-outcome 3 of the National Development Plan’s Outcome 14 which promotes participation in sport and recreation as well as advocating the transformation thereof.
•    Acknowledging achievements of individuals within the South African sport and recreation sector, herein referring to the sports stalwarts’ achievements from yesteryears.

That we are able to have the privilege of referring to this gathering under the name Andrew Mlangeni, is indeed and honour for the Sport and Recreation SA.  Although Dr. Andrew Mlangeni prefers to remember himself as one of the ‘backroom boys’, a lesser known struggle hero, he remains a formidable force of a struggle stalwart. A Rivonia Trialist, and Robben Island prisoner 467/64 who was next door inmate to Nelson Mandela’s acclaimed 466/64 prison number. With the passing of Mr. Ahmed Kathrada (March 2017), Ntate Mlangeni (91) is one of only two Rivonia Trialist still alive with Denis Goldberg.

At the age of 93 and counting, the veteran parliamentarian is a livid golfer off handicap 14. He has participated in various golf events and he is a continuous feature in the Annual Presidential Golf Day. This sportsman is a larger than life character and a motivating tool to the youth of South Africa to take sport serious and play with passion.

He is indeed an embodiment of the whole concept of life-long participation in sport.

Tonight, in partnership with the June and Andrew Mlangeni Foundation, we host the 8th Andrew Mlangeni Green Jacket Award. The Andrew Mlangeni Green Jacket Award was launched in 2011 to honour sport legends of our country.  Key to this initiative is “HonouringLegends”. Herein referring to SA’s sports heroes of yesteryear whose success as sports people could not be celebrated because of the apartheid regime’s laws. The evening’s gala dinner showcases these sport stalwarts who have made an immense contribution to sport in the country but never received due recognition to the previous racist apartheid government.

The Department of Sport and Recreation in partnership with the AM Foundation recognises their contribution of these legends by awarding them a special Green Jacket.

So tonight as we honour our 8 Andrew Mlageni Green Jacket Award Recipients - as a collective, we say to them REALEBOGA.

We are humbled and are indebted to your selfless spirit.

We are who we are today because of you.

I thank you,
